Arch Supports – A great solution, until they’re not

The human foot has 26 bones, 33 joints and over 100 tendons, muscles, and ligaments. It is one of the most complex parts of the body. And that complexity means that no two feet are the same; in fact, your feet are as unique to you as your fingerprints.

Footwear manufacturers design their products around statistically average feet. To accommodate the different shapes and postures of a particular size foot, footwear manufacturers put foam inserts into their footwear to cushion and protect the sole of the foot from the materials that bind footwear together. While inserts are protective and comfy, they are not supportive.

Who can benefit from better arch support?

Everyone. Removing and replacing the inserts that come with new footwear with an over-the-counter product is the easiest and least expensive way to improve comfort and support.

When do over-the-counter arch supports not work?

When there’s pain in the foot, knees, or lower back. Feet are like the foundation of a building. Their posture (low arch, high arch, pronated, supinated) determines the alignment of the skeletal system from the ankle up. Unsupported feet mean not just wear and tear on the feet but also the knees and the lower back.

Pre molded or over the counter arch supports that are designed to fit most everyone, will usually not fix pain. When pain is the symptom, the correct solution is custom molded orthotics.
